Nearly 80 dogs seized from unlicensed Colorado animal sanctuary

DENVER (KDVR) — More than 80 dogs were ordered to be transferred to animal welfare organizations after an unlicensed ranch and sanctuary owner in Lyons failed to abide by a court order.

Drew Renkewitz was ordered on Oct. 30 to stop sheltering 82 dogs at Just 4 Jacks Ranch and Sanctuary without a valid license, according to a release from the Colorado Department of Agriculture.

Under the Pet Animal Care and Facilities Act , anyone sheltering, housing or harboring more than 15 dogs and/or cats must have a pet animal care facility license.

According to court documents , Just 4 Jacks applied for a license last March, but the organization failed all four inspections.

Courts step in over unlicensed dog harboring

The commissioner filed suit in Larimer County district court on Jan. 4 over Renkewitz’s refusal to comply with the cease and desist order. The court also issued a temporary restraining order and a preliminary injunction ordering Just 4 Jacks to move the dogs out of state or relinquish them to NoCo Humane Society by Jan. 30.
