Georgia DNR places safety signage at mainland Sapelo Island ferry dock

MCINTOSH COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) – The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) placed new signs on Wednesday at the gangway entrance at the mainland Sapelo Island ferry dock in Meridian.

The signage reads: “Gangway is for transient access only. Out of an abundance of caution, do not exceed more than 8 individuals (or 4 with carts) evenly spaced.”

This comes days after a deadly gangway collapse at the Marsh Landing Dock.

Officials have said roughly 40 people were on the aluminum gangway that collapsed on Saturday when the metal snapped.

The DNR later said engineers calculated the gangway should have been able to support the weight of 320 people.

The gangway was inspected less than a year ago , in December 2023, by Crescent Equipment Company, according to the DNR.
