New I-PASS stickers now available as state dumps transponders

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois’ $70 million replacement for its decades-old I-PASS transponder technology is now available for purchase.

The transponders are being replaced by sticker tags, though drivers will continue to be able to use transponders as long as they haven’t expired.

Unlike the transponders, the sticker tag won’t need batteries, which can run down. Once a sticker tag is applied to a windshield, it will only stop working if it’s removed.

That means it can’t be switched to another vehicle, as many drivers did with transponders.

The tags are available at tollway customer service centers, as well as at oases.

In early February, the stickers will also be offered at Jewel-Osco stores and on the Illinois Tollway website.

Visitors to next month’s Chicago Auto Show can also get the tags at the Illinois Tollway’s booth.
