Sen. Durbin continues push for protecting kids online

CHICAGO — Illinois Senator Dick Durbin continues to make his case for cracking down on social media platforms.

Durbin said he has never experienced anything like the hearing that happened this week with the tech CEO’s, scalling their responses totally inadequate.

The hearing was focused on how to protect children from child sexual abuse material and other harmful content and interactions on social media.

On Friday, Durbin spoke at the Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center saying lawmakers must act on legislation requiring more protections, including making it easier for victims to sue the platforms.

Robert and Rose Bronstein were among the families at the hearing on Wednesday. Their son Nate was cyber bullied by classmates and died by suicide in 2022.

The Bronsteins said they want parents to know that no child is immune to bullying and abuse online.

Durbin said he thinks this week’s hearing will be the catalyst needed to get bipartisan legislation passed this year.
