Marginal Risk of Severe Weather Targets Midwest, Over 12 Million at Risk

NORMAN, OK – The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center today issued a significant convective outlook, warning of a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms later this afternoon and evening. The areas poised for potential impact include parts of far eastern Iowa, northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin, and the vicinity of southern Lake Michigan. Notably, this severe weather risk encompasses major population centers, with approximately 27,320 square miles and an estimated population of 12,804,081 people under threat, including the cities of Chicago, IL; Milwaukee, WI; Madison, WI; Aurora, IL; and Rockford, IL.

As of the 2 PM CST update, environmental conditions were ripe for the development of severe weather, with surface observations noting upper 40s dewpoints across parts of Illinois and clearing skies in regions of eastern Iowa and western Illinois under a mid-level dry slot. Shallow cloud development observed over northeastern Missouri and central/eastern Iowa signals large-scale ascent as an upper trough advances over a warm and moist sector.
