Bill to Provide Illinoisians 50% Property Tax Relief Redirecting Pension Funds to School Districts

Illinois property tax relief bill unveiled to tackle statewide burden

State Representative Tim Ozinga has introduced a groundbreaking bill aimed at significantly reducing property taxes across the state. The proposed legislation, known as House Bill 4866, spearheaded by Ozinga from Mokena, Illinois, seeks to redirect funds saved from dwindling pension payments towards bolstering local school districts and easing the burden of property taxes, which currently rank second-highest in the nation within the state.

Addressing the critical need for property tax relief, Ozinga highlighted the formation of the Education Property Tax Relief Fund during a recent press conference on February 7th. This fund, slated to be administered by the Illinois State Board of Education, will earmark grants to qualifying school districts statewide, aiming to mitigate the heavy property tax burden faced by Illinoisans. Ozinga emphasized that these grants would be distributed on a per-pupil basis, ensuring equitable distribution across districts.
