‘Nobody got paid’ Mississippi man fired, unpaid after 11 days at work-from-home gig

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A young man looking for a work-at-home job found one on Zip Recruiter. However, when he raised some questions about his training, he was fired. At first, he was excited about the customer service position and the opportunities for good pay and benefits that came with it.

From his home in Mississippi, Olajuwon Lewis said he was interested in working from home five days a week, for a business called Empress Professions, based out of Florida. He was impressed by their benefits: $17.50 hourly salary, Health and dental insurance, Flexible working hours, and professional development opportunities. However, by the second week of training, things went sideways.

“I got the acceptance letter, job offer, I accepted it. I went through the whole training scenario. I was in training for like 11 days. That was until I spoke out about the training and what we were learning,” said Lewis.

He shared that he and the other employees were to be paid while being trained as a customer service rep for AT&T.
