Fishing on ice or land in 2024? A look at popular winter fishing spots in New Mexico

Fishing in New Mexico is not limited to warmer months.

In fact, the New Mexico State Parks Division and the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish encourage anglers to ice fish in northern New Mexico and on the banks in the milder weather of southern New Mexico.

Here is a look at popular winter fishing spots across the state:

Northern New Mexico offers fishing on ice

With elevations around 8,000 feet, four northern New Mexico lakes offer prime opportunities for ice fishing, according to the New Mexico State Parks Department, a division of the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD).

Eagle Nest Lake State Park in northeastern New Mexico’s Colfax County on Jan. 27 hosted its annual ice fishing tournament.

A New Mexico State Parks press release noted the tournament is one of the largest ice fishing events in New Mexico.

The tournament was organized by volunteers from “Friends of Eagle Nest Lake and Cimarron Canyon State Parks.”

Staffers from Eagle Nest Lake, Coyote Creek, Ute Lake and Pecos Canyon helped with the tournament said Carol Rupp of the Friends organization.
