Life expectancy in New York state: A look at the forces shaping the numbers

Case in point: News of Now team reporter Victoria E. Freile’s article last week about forces affecting life expectancy in the United States and in New York state. Not surprisingly, life expectancy dropped a few years in 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic killed tens of thousands of Americans.

Freile’s insightful article goes into more depth on that. Victoria writes:

Chronic health issues, gun violence, overdose deaths — all have impacted New Yorkers’ life expectancy in recent years.

In 2020, the leading cause of death in New York was heart disease, which was also true nationally. Other leading causes of death in New York include cancer and COVID-19, which respectively round out the state’s top three causes of death, according to the CDC.
