Issue 1 on Ohio’s November ballot would change the way the state draws district maps for Congress, the Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio Senate.
It may sound boring, but it has a huge impact on who holds power in the Statehouse and in Congress.
The constitutional amendment before voters would replace the current politician-run redistricting commission with a 15-member citizen commission of five Republicans, five Democrats and five independents.
Statehouse reporter Jessie Balmert has been following Ohio’s struggles with redistricting for years. Today she has done an in-depth story explaining the issue on the ballot and how it would work. She also takes a look at other states like Arizona and Michigan that have tried similar changes.
