What does your school district’s report card say?

Good morning!

I’m back from a whirlwind week in Philadelphia. On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of advising a couple of Ohio State students who covered the presidential debate . I am so proud of their work, and it was encouraging to see student journalists covering the event like pros!

I spent the rest of the week at the Education Writers Association’s Higher Education Seminar learning about everything from free speech on campus to university finances. I can’t wait to get to work on some stories I’ve had in mind for a while.

And I ate a delicious Philly cheesesteak egg roll. I miss it already.

Review Session

The Ohio Department of Education released its annual report cards for school districts Friday.

ODE collects information from the state’s more than 600 public school districts and funnels the data into six categories: achievement, progress, early literacy, gap closing, graduation and readiness (which isn’t tracked this year). Two years ago, the state shifted from an A-F letter-grade system to new categories and calculations based on a star system.
