Oregon Zoo Welcomes ‘Critically Endangered’ ‘Ultra-Rare’ Kingfisher

Oregon Zoo is thrilled to announce the arrival of a trio of Sihek Kingfishers. These birds are “critically endangered,” so having them at the zoo is a huge plus for conservation.

On April 30, 2024, the Oregon Zoo gave everyone a look at this colorful bird while sharing why it’s big news these birds are now at the Oregon Zoo.

“Bringing Sihek Kingfishers to the Vollum Aviary is such an amazing opportunity to help this species,” said Travis Koons, who oversees the zoo’s bird population at Oregon Zoo. “We’re very lucky here at the Oregon Zoo to be trusted with the responsibility.”

It’s a big responsibility because only 110 of these birds are left in the world. Three are at the Oregon Zoo, and all are in human care.

The three birds were taken from the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute earlier in the year. They were moved to make room for other birds at the institute, and many organizations are working together to ensure their survival.
