RI snowstorm: Governor urges minimal driving Tuesday as some towns may see a foot of snow

Tuesday’s predicted snowstorm triggered a tractor-trailer travel ban in Rhode Island, shuttered state government and closed Providence public schools. Providence will start a parking ban at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, with Mayor Brett Smiley warning that the vehicle of anyone violating the ban will be towed.

Gov. Dan McKee called it “about as bad of a timing you could get for a storm” in terms of impact on work commutes.

The governor ultimately did not issue a comprehensive travel ban by Monday night, but instead urged Rhode Islanders to stay off the roads from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday. He also asked that businesses allow their employees flexibility during the workday.

The tractor-trailer ban was set to begin at midnight Tuesday and continue until further notice. McKee’s office said it applies to “all interstate highways and state roads” and was coordinated with Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York.

Here’s what the National Weather Service says to expect

A “quick-hitting” winter storm will bring heavy snow to most of the region Tuesday, possibly dropping more than a foot of snow across northern Rhode Island, according to the National Weather Service.
