Why are flags at half-staff in Virginia?

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Governor Glenn Youngkin has ordered all United States and Virginia flags on state and local buildings to be flown at half-staff on Sunday, May 5.

According to Youngkin’s office, flags are ordered to be flown at half-staff in honor of National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service Day, recognizing the 15 Virginia firefighters being honored at the National Fallen Firefighter’s Memorial in Maryland .

The flags will be lowered at sunrise Sunday, May 5 and remain at half-staff until sunset that day.
