STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Cargo will soon go where cars go.
The New York City Department of Transportation has added four new truck routes to Staten Island as part of the City Council-mandated truck route network redesign. This redesign is the first to New York City’s truck network since the 1970s, according to the DOT.
The redesign creates new restrictions on what roads trucks can use, shifting them off local streets and onto highways while shortening connections to and from major industrial zones. Trucks should only use non-designated routes at the beginning or end of a trip, when traveling between their origin/destination and a truck route, according to the DOT website.
As part of the redesign, the DOT has added the following truck routes:
- Hannah Street between Bay Street and Front Street
- West Service Road between Arden Avenue and West Shore Expressway
- Drumgoole Road West between Korean War Veterans Parkway and Richmond Avenue
- Veterans Road West between Bloomingdale Road and West Shore Expressway
“Truck routes keep truck traffic off local streets and on designated corridors with the capacity to handle the safe movement of both people and freight,” said city DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn. “As our city grows, designating truck routes with intention and redesigning the corridors they run on with vigilance will contribute to healthier, safer and more prosperous communities across the five boroughs. We continue to work every day to reduce the number of truck trips in the city with delivery alternatives through the use of ferry barges, e-cargo bikes and other smaller, last-mile delivery options.”…
