New laws give NYPD vets more flexibility

Gov. Kathy Hochul signed two bills into law on Sept. 28, expanding pension options for some NYPD officers and allowing eligible members to remain on the job until age 65.

Assemblymember Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-Howard Beach) was the prime Assembly sponsor of the pension legislation, which addresses a difference in how retirement benefits are calculated for Tier 2 officers based on when they joined the department.

The law, S7808A/A8322A, allows Tier 2 officers who began service on or after July 1, 2000, to base their pensions on either their final 12 months of pay or the average of their three highest-earning years, whichever is higher. That option was available previously only to Tier 2 officers who began service before July 1, 2000…
