Family of Staten Island woman, 43, stabbed to death protecting daughter will speak at sentencing Wednesday

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The family of Jennira Roundtree — who was killed while purportedly trying to pull her daughter from a large fight in West Brighton — is expected to deliver a statement Wednesday in court, before a judge sentences the woman who has admitted responsibility for the killing.

The defendant, Jasmin Thompson, 26, of Richmond Terrace in New Brighton, pleaded guilty in February to first-degree manslaughter, in exchange for an offer of 12 years in prison and five years of post-release supervision.

Justice Alexander B. Jeong has reviewed a report by probation officers, who interviewed Thompson ahead of sentencing in part to gauge her sincerity in accepting guilt for the slaying. Jeong also will hear from the prosecution and the defense before handing down a sentence.

Had Thompson been convicted at trial on the top count of second-degree murder, she would have faced 25 years to life in prison.

Prosecutors said the slaying unfolded at about 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 7, 2025, outside the West Brighton Houses near the 800 block of Henderson Avenue. Officers and EMS who responded found Roundtree unconscious with multiple stab wounds…
