‘Permanent swamp’: Water line break prompts health worries at popular Staten Island sports fields

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A broken water line has turned an entrance to one of Staten Island’s most-used sports fields into a potential public health hazard.

Earlier this month, the Advance/SILive.com received a tip that a water leak near the Mason Avenue entrance of Miller Field has created a “permanent swamp,” with ongoing flooding creating various stagnant pools of water at the location.

The reader went on to voice concerns that the stagnant pools have become a magnet for local geese, with much of the water riddled with bird droppings and becoming a potential breeding ground for bacteria and mosquitoes.

“This isn’t just a maintenance issue; it has become a serious public health and safety hazard for our community,” the reader wrote. “Our community and our children deserve better than a ‘swamp’ at the entrance to a public park.”
