SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV)—An orange flag now flies outside Syracuse City Hall as city leaders, survivors, outreach workers, and community members gathered Tuesday for a Gun Violence Awareness Month flag-raising ceremony.
The event, organized by the Mayor’s Office to Reduce Gun Violence, honored victims and survivors while highlighting continued efforts on prevention, healing, and peace.
Dozens stood on the steps of City Hall and watched as the orange flag rose above downtown Syracuse — for some, it’s awareness, and for others, it’s personal.
According to city leaders, the average number of homicides in Syracuse has risen more than 30% over the last decade. Leaders also say many children are becoming desensitized to violence around them…
