Sylvan Beach locals plead to teens to stay away for ‘Senior Skip Day’

SYLVAN BEACH, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — With school winding down, many high school seniors in Onondaga and Oswego counties are planning to play hooky and head to Sylvan Beach. But law enforcement officials and school resource officers hope to avoid a repeat of last year’s events, when several fights broke out near the water.

A flyer is currently circulating online encouraging soon-to-be graduates at several area high schools to head to the beach for “Senior Skip Day” at noon on Monday. After getting wind of the news, many beachgoers voiced their distaste.

“I don’t think they need a Senior Skip Day,” Sharon Zazzara, a frequent visitor, said. “They’re out of school in two weeks anyway. So, why do you need to skip school now? They should just concentrate on getting out of school.”

Two best friends, who have been visiting the beach every summer since they were born, shared that Senior Skip Day has only gotten rowdier and more violent over the past several years, making families uncomfortable…
