Water main break collapses road and swallows car

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — A water main break has the bottom of the ramp off I-690 Westbound to Geddes Street closed right now. This is between Spencer Street and Edison Street.

Officials said a broken fire hydrant service line made the road unstable. And, it looks like a car was swallowed up when the asphalt gave way. This is right across from the Harley-Davidson dealership.

The driver of the white car told NewsChannel 9 | LocalSYR.com that, while on his way to work, he was cut off by another vehicle, forcing him to go into water ponding on the road. The weight of his car caused the ground to give way and the road to collapse in, city officials suspect.

The driver was not seriously hurt, but said he had to get out through his passenger window. Once standing on the hood of his car, emergency crews used a ladder to get him out of the sinkhole…
