A Tornado Watch has been issued for the counties southeast of Syracuse due to the potential of severe thunderstorms capable of producing of a tornado or two across the region. The counties in the Watch include Chenango, Otsego, Madison and Oneida Counties. The greatest risk for tornadoes would be now through about 4 pm.
When is the best chance for severe t-storms?
Now. Storms have developed over the Southern Tier early this afternoon and have already triggered tornado warnings. These storms continue to track northeast and would stay SOUTH of Syracuse.
What are the greatest risks with these storms?
The greatest risk with any storms this afternoon will be damaging winds of 60+ mph. In addition, the conditions in the lower atmosphere this afternoon are also favorable for rotation in a few of the storms so isolated tornadoes are a possibility.
Strong winds, whether caused by a severe thunderstorm or a tornado this afternoon, could cause damage such as knocking down trees or tree limbs. Wind damage has the potential to cause at least scattered power outages in the region too…
