SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — July marked Disability Pride Month, a time that commemorates the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). While cities across the U.S. continue to find their footing in raising awareness during the month, advocates note that the observance receives little local public attention.
Kelley Cooper, Director of Deaf Services for Aurora of Central New York, acknowledged how local agencies in the accessibility space do come together for events like an annual flag-raising, but still feels that the word has yet to spread.
“I don’t believe there is enough exposure for the Disability Pride Month celebrations here in Syracuse,” said Cooper, who is deaf. “Getting the word out to the general public will be critical to growing the success of this celebration moving forward.”…
