SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — A major change is now in effect for thousands of teachers across New York State.
The legislation, signed into law on May 26, allows eligible Tier 6 teachers to retire earlier without a reduction in their pension benefits. Tier 6 teachers are those who joined the New York State Teachers’ retirement system on or after April 1, 2012. Under the reform, eligible teachers with 30 years of credited service can now retire at age 58 instead of waiting until age 63 to receive their full pension benefits.
“There’s been a couple other smaller wins along the way. But this year was our biggest win and got us as close as we have been since 2012 to being aligned with Tier 4,” said Nicole Capsello, President of the Syracuse Teachers Association…
