SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Since 2000, the week after Labor Day has meant another year of Art on the Porches in the historic Strathmore neighborhood.
Handfuls of art-related festivals like these are usually characterized by their rows of tents, transactions, and a quick stop to admire a gallery. But this gathering of artists and musicians takes it up a notch, incorporating interactive activity booths, live music, and a celebration of local art from porch to porch.
“This is something that brings me joy,” said Caroline Tauxe, a retired anthropology professor who now creates art using fabric as her main medium. “And I love interacting with people who find my work fun.”
Tauxe primarily sells earrings that she made from vibrantly-colored fabrics collaged together with polymer medium acrylic. While hand sewing fabrics is something woven into her life naturally, Tauxe’s travels are her source of inspiration, picking up fabrics around the world and incorporating them into her art.
“Places like West Africa, Guatemala, India– these are all fabric meccas for me,” she said. “Brazil does not have a big fabric tradition. But I’m inspired by Brazilian culture, which has its cardinal values, beauty, including the beauty of the heart of the people.”…
