Syracuse completes LED conversion of all public streetlights, DPW says

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse has completed a citywide conversion of its public street lights to LED fixtures, according to the latest update from the Department of Public Works.

The city began a comprehensive overview of its street light program in 2019, aiming for more efficient energy use to save money and increase safety.

Street Lighting Manager Ken Towsley said the city has worked with the Syracuse Police Department in recent years to address lighting in areas with higher crime. “There are some areas, I worked with the police department multiple times in the past couple years — Delaware Street and Richmond Ave are two examples of high crime,” Towsley said. “We went with was a different color light. It’s more of a white light, same wattage, but it gives a more of a brighter feel to it.”…
