State landfill capacity dwindling; Madison County asking for more

Madison County wants to accept more solid waste at its landfill in the town of Lincoln.

The Madison County Board of Supervisors voted to allow the solid waste department to apply for a permit modification with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) that would increase the amount of waste the landfill can receive annually from 60,000 tons to 125,000 tons.

The county plans, if the modification is approved to reach agreements with neighboring counties and public agencies, to increase the landfill’s total tonnage to about 100,000 pounds a year, with the additional 25,000 tons requested in the permit providing operational flexibility, officials said…
