DEC targets toxic HABS in Skaneateles Lake

A $2.5 million push to fight harmful algal blooms launched Thursday on the shores of Skaneateles Lake, according to The Citizen. State environmental officials unveiled the new research program at Clift Park as blooms continue to threaten Finger Lakes water quality.

DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton said the funding will help universities, nonprofits and other partners study harmful algal blooms and improve prevention efforts. The program expands the state’s six-point HAB roadmap released in March.

Officials said New York has already spent more than $400 million battling blooms statewide. DEC researchers also pointed to action plans, mitigation studies and expanded monitoring across lakes, including Owasco Lake after toxins appeared in drinking water a decade ago…
