How a rare scholarship brought 5 Mohawk siblings to SU: Shakoronhiokewen Jacobs will become the fifth sibling in his family to graduate from Syracuse University this weekend, all through a rare scholarship that covered tuition, fees, housing, and food. The Mohawk siblings from the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation faced intense homesickness—what their family calls “the rez monster”—along with racism and cultural isolation on a campus where Indigenous students make up less than 1% of the population. Over the years, SU’s Haudenosaunee Promise Scholarship waived more than $1 million in costs for the Jacobs family, giving them opportunities they couldn’t have found anywhere else.
Lysander town board approves moratorium on data centers: The Lysander Town Board on Thursday night approved a six-month moratorium blocking the development and construction of new data centers. More than 350 residents attended the hearing. Only about 150 could fit inside Town Hall, while hundreds of others waited outside in line for a chance to sign a petition in support of the moratorium. 24-year-old killed in Syracuse shooting: A 24-year-old man died Thursday night after he was shot in the neck in Syracuse, police said. Around 9:33 p.m., Syracuse police officers responded to the 500 block of Wolf Street after a ShotSpotter alert detected gunfire in the area. When officers arrived, they found the man unconscious and not breathing, police said. Read more
Body camera footage shows how Oswego County cops turned routine traffic stops into immigration arrests: A sheriff’s deputy in Oswego County pulled over a driver one afternoon in January 2025. The driver and his passenger spoke only Spanish. So the deputy took the driver’s phone, which had a photo of the driver’s Ecuadorian passport on it, went back to his patrol car, and called up an acquaintance. That acquaintance: a United States Border Patrol agent. Half an hour later, a handful of Border Patrol agents arrived and arrested the men. The case is not unique. Read more…
