Police departments across N.Y. struggle to fill ranks as recruitment troubles deepen

Two officers were shot and wounded and a third was injured during a standoff in Syracuse over the weekend, an incident that brought renewed attention to the dangers of law enforcement and the persistent challenges police departments face in recruiting and retaining officers.

More than 70% of law enforcement agencies nationwide say recruitment is more difficult now than it was five years ago, according to a 2024 survey by the International Association of Chiefs of Police that drew responses from more than 1,000 U.S. agencies. On average, those agencies are operating at about 91% of their authorized staffing levels.
