STD spreading to a few babies amid explosive growth in Onondaga County

Syracuse, NY – Syphilis is now so common in Onondaga County that health officials are signaling the alarm about the number of babies born with the debilitating disease.

Seven babies were born with congenital syphilis in 2025, bringing the total to 15 since 2000, county health commissioner Dr. Kathryn Anderson told syracuse.com | The Post-Standard. That’s comes after years of virtually no reported cases of syphilis passed from mother to baby.
