SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Active shooter training will also be included as part of lifeguard training to ensure security following a deadly shooting at Onondaga Park pool in 2025.
According to Parks, Recreation and Youth Programs Commissioner Syeisha Byrd, lifeguards were the ones that stepped up to try and help save 15-year-old Adhon Thomas after he was shot on Jul. 7, 2025.
“It’s sad to say, but it happens,” said Byrd. “Our lifeguards were the ones that stepped in and provided CPR and life-saving techniques. We will always train our staff, we will always be prepared.”…
