Other Earth Day sustainability initiatives include coastline cleanups and an ecoATM expansion
The Winn-Dixie Co. is marking Earth Day with a slate of sustainability moves, the most notable of which is an autonomous ice micro-factory it opened this week at its Plant City, Fla., distribution center in partnership with technology company Relocalize.
The facility manufactures SE Grocers Party Cubes ice on-site and on-demand, which the grocer says can cut transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional off-site production and shipping. Because the ice is made where it’s distributed, the process also significantly reduces water waste and plastic pollution. The plastic-negative certified packaging also removes more plastic from the environment than it generates.
Party cubes are currently landing on shelves at the newly remodeled Temple Terrace Winn-Dixie, with a Tampa Bay area rollout expected in the coming weeks as well as a broader Florida expansion…
