TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — In an emotional moment for students, faculty, and guests, a student graduating from the University of South Florida rose from her wheelchair to cross the commencement stage.
The university said the graduate, Shay Burress, has a medical condition that flared up during her senior year, requiring her to use a wheelchair.

But after earning her bachelor’s degree in environmental science and policy, Burress overcame the odds and stood up to receive her diploma.
The crowd erupted in cheers for Burress, who, assisted by a fellow graduate, used a walker to cross the stage.
