Funky Frida’s, the Frida Kahlo-inspired Tex-Mex cantina that brought stained-glass lanterns, parrot-shaped Tiffany lamps, and a disco ball to Arcadia’s Indian School Road, is closing its doors Sunday after less than a year in business. The restaurant’s owners say the space next to O.H.S.O. Brewery + Distillery will become a private event venue for weddings, corporate gatherings, and other bookings instead.
Owners announced the closure via social media, according to Phoenix New Times, with the restaurant’s final service set for Sunday night. Funky Frida’s opened in October 2025 at 4910 E. Indian School Road, taking over a building that had previously housed Little O’s Arcadia Market, a counter-service eatery and coffee shop that closed for what was originally billed as a summer break before the space was fully renovated into the cantina concept. Restaurateur Jon Lane and his team, who also operate O.H.S.O. Brewery + Distillery and The Starving Artist, transformed the location into a Tex-Mex bar and restaurant that Lane described as serving traditional gringo Mexican food, per the same report.
A Menu Built for Both Bar Nights and Full Dinners
The kitchen leaned into a menu meant to work for game-watching bar crowds and sit-down diners alike, featuring a signature smash burger, a half rack of chipotle barbecue ribs served with corn on the cob, and a dozen different margarita varieties. Chef Junior Cortez led the kitchen with family recipes rooted in Mexico City, while Executive Chef Bruce Briere focused on creative dish pairing and plating, according to KTAR News. Per WhatNow, the menu also included lobster quesadillas, citrus-chipotle ribs, and smoked-brisket tacos, along with a smash burger served on a sizzling cast-iron fajita skillet and a 70-ounce group margarita meant for sharing.
The restaurant also leaned on daily promotions to draw neighborhood regulars, offering weekday happy hour specials with $3 beers and $6 house margaritas from 3 to 6 p.m., plus a $17 boozy brunch deal pairing an entree with a drink, according to Phoenix Happy Hours. Free chips and salsa were a staple for visitors, and owners are encouraging customers to stop in for one final margarita before the doors close for good.
Why the Cantina Concept Didn’t Stick
Despite the colorful build-out and ambitious menu, Funky Frida’s did not become the neighborhood haunt its owners had envisioned, according to Phoenix New Times.
