TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A 14-year-old suffered serious facial injuries and underwent surgery after a firework exploded in his face Sunday, as health officials are warning families about the dangers of backyard fireworks ahead of the Fourth of July holiday.
The incident happened on Meadowbrook Court. The boy’s mother said her son lit the firework but did not set it down in time before it went off. He remains hospitalized and faces a long recovery, his mother said.
Hannah Fairchild, injury prevention coordinator at Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center, said the Fourth of July is one of the most dangerous holidays of the year. She recommends keeping a bucket of water or a hose nearby, never allowing young children to handle fireworks, and leaving more powerful displays to professionals…
