U.P. mine permit fight could ripple to Lenawee, home to endangered redside dace

GOGEBIC CO. — A fight over a proposed copper mine in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula could carry implications for Lenawee County, one of just six Michigan counties home to the endangered redside dace.

The state environmental agency, EGLE, is taking public comment and has scheduled a July 8 hearing on a wastewater permit for the Copperwood Mine in Gogebic County, operated by Canadian company Highland Copper.
