To the editor: Recall amendment lacks clarity

The recent vote by Maumee City Council to place a proposed charter amendment establishing a recall process on the ballot raises an important issue. It is not whether recall is a good idea. Reasonable people can disagree on that question.

The real issue is whether the proposed charter language is sufficiently clear and complete before it is presented to the voters.

During council’s deliberations, questions were raised about how the proposed recall process would actually work and whether important procedural safeguards had been omitted. Those questions deserved thoughtful discussion. Instead, debate was cut short, and council proceeded to vote without fully exploring the issues…
