Intellectually disabled artist thrives at Anne Grady Services

A few months ago, his painting — an unbroken Humpty Dumpty — sold for a whopping $650 at auction.

For more than a decade, Eric Richardson has been a participant in the day program of Anne Grady Services which serves individuals with intellectual disabilities and exceptionalities.

“He sat on the wall, and he was a whole Humpty Dumpty. He had not fallen and broken,” Julia Hage, the center’s mission advancement director, said of the painting. “His piece was unique because you’re never going to find an unbroken Humpty Dumpty.”

Since joining the program right from high school, Mr. Richardson, now 30, has obtained a paid job at the facility and has greatly developed his artistic abilities.

“He is one of our most featured artists as he’s donated numerous pieces to different events in our community,” Ms. Hage said, adding that his colorful painting was one of their “biggest live auction pieces last year.”

Lauren Dixon, the center’s art coordinator, works to develop the artistic skills and abilities of the individuals through a variety of arts and crafts, she said.
