Editorial: Toledo tops on climate

The city of Toledo is about to develop a climate action plan, paid for by the One Percent for the Environment Fund created in 2022.

It is wise for Toledo to take a leadership role in environmental sustainability because renewable energy is northwest Ohio’s most significant growth industry.

For $120,000 the city will get a customized plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Nutter Consulting, a California specialist with an impressive list of clients including the state of California and cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Nutter Consulting was the low bidder to a request for proposals. The group already has created the Ohio Clean Energy plan for Toledo and Lucas County and has helped these local governments identify federal programs to implement the plan.

The commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions was approved by a city council ordinance in 2021. The city committed to a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Toledo by 30 percent by 2030 below 2010 levels, and by 50 percent by 2050.
