Like many places across the state, Gresham has seen a large increase in e-bike use in recent years. While they are a great transportation option, the Gresham Police Department warned that unsafe riding behaviors, especially speeding and riding on sidewalks, can create dangerous situations.
“E-bikes are great for getting around, but riders still have a responsibility to follow the rules and keep everyone safe,” said Officer Jarom Sweazey. “Parents and adults also play an important role in helping young riders understand those rules.”
Oregon has already established several rules around e-bikes.
- If it can travel faster than 28 miles per hour or does not have working pedals, it is not considered an e-bike and is not allowed on bike lanes, sidewalks or shared-use paths.
- Riders under 16 must wear a helmet when riding a bicycle or e-bike
- All e-scooter riders must wear a helmet, regardless of age
The allowed operating age of e-bikes will change on Jan. 1, 2027…
