PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A new month begins Saturday, and that means new weather normals are in store for the greater Portland-Vancouver area.
August is typically the warmest month of the year for the greater Portland area. On average, temperatures should be in the low 80s when looking at the next four weeks. Despite its “warmest month of the year” status, temperatures actually start to fall.
August 1 starts off with the warmest daytime high temperatures, with an average of 84 degrees. The 84-degree average quickly starts to slip lower just five days into August. The month will end with a new average daytime high of 80 degrees.
This cooling trend is due to the lower sun angle and the loss of light expected over the next four weeks. Portland will lose a total of 85 minutes’ worth of light this month. The later sunrises and earlier sunsets help aid in this gradual cooling trend.

The gradual cooling trend also comes with a better chance of rain. August is still the second driest month of the year, only averaging over a half inch of rain, but that’s an improvement from July’s average.
