Avamere CEO explains strategic pivot toward senior living

Two weeks after Avamere’s primary landlord surprised the long-term care community by announcing an upcoming transfer of the provider’s assets, company leaders are explaining their decision to withdraw from the skilled nursing business to focus on senior living.

Avamere was founded 30 years ago as a single nursing home and eventually grew to a peak of 35 skilled nursing facilities across six states. Now, leadership says it is time to transition to senior living, a sector with less oppressive federal regulation and uncertainty, Avamere Group CEO Mary Kofstad told McKnight’s.

“The message was kind of clear: Let’s simplify,” recalled Kofstad, who succeeded founder Rick Miller as CEO in 2024. “Let’s focus on what a lot of our customers are telling us: They just want to age in place.”…
