PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Portland couple is facing charges after they allegedly stole multiple urns containing cremated human remains and sold the metal for drug money.
Timothy James Newbury, 50, and Sierra Kennedy, 43, have been charged with abuse of a memorial to the dead, a misdemeanor, after they allegedly took approximately 60 urns from the mausoleum at Wilhelm’s Memorial Funeral Home in the Sellwood neighborhood.
According to charging documents, Newbury visited the mausoleum with Kennedy on multiple occasions through May. They told staff they were there to visit the cremated remains of Paul Newbury. Later, staff received a phone call from a man who said he wished to remain anonymous. The man reportedly told staff that his mother and her boyfriend, later identified as Timothy Newbury and Sierra Kennedy, had been stealing “trophy-like vases or urns” from the mausoleum and selling them at a scrap metal yard in North Portland for drug money…
