Mother files $30 million lawsuit following death of her son aboard USS Helena

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A mother has filed a $30 million lawsuit against the federal government, alleging negligence led to the death of her son aboard the USS Helena in 2024.

Nicole Saunders filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia following the death of her son, Sonar Technician Submarine 3rd Class, Timothy Sanders, who died after being electrocuted aboard the submarine, according to court documents.

The lawsuit alleges personnel from Fleet Maintenance were negligent while performing work on an electrical panel in a storage area known as the “Capstan Space.” The complaint includes negligence claims under theSuits in Admiralty Act and thePublic Vessels Act
