NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — After several years of delay, the City of Norfolk is officially on the hunt for contractors to demolish the majority of the former Military Circle Mall.
Bid documents were released last week for the job that the city says can take up to 15 months to complete once the work begins. The city is asking for wrecking crews to take most of the one-time 935,000-square-foot shopping mecca down to the concrete slab, to position the 72-acre property for eventual redevelopment.
The former JCPenney, now occupied by Sentara, and the Ross Dress for Less store would remain.
Demolition of Military Circle Mall to begin this week
Initially, the city was hoping to start the work in 2023, the year the mall closed for good after more than half a century. However, plans stalled as Ross refused to sign off on plans.
