“Flesh eating bacteria” to amp up in summer months

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Vibrio infections are pretty preventable, but not a lot of people know about it, according to Virginia health experts. Often referred to as a flesh-eating bacteria, the symptoms can get pretty nasty.

Its symptoms largely depend on how you contract Vibrio. The bacteria thrives in salt water, making it more common in the summer months. Many patients who get an infection do so by eating raw shellfish, causing gastrointestinal symptoms.
