A dangerous trip across Military Highway for those who call motels home

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Along the 1000 block of North Military Highway, there are no tall pine trees, Azalea flower beds, or picket fences to keep children and pets safe. But the area is a destination for people who live in low-cost motels.

According to Norfolk Police, an 86-year-old man was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in this area just before 11 p.m. Monday.

A suspect, 24-year-old Malik Alea-Ngongo, was taken into custody after police spotted his car a few blocks away on Curlew Drive.

The victim’s name and address have not been released, nor have police revealed whether speed and alcohol were factors in the victim’s death.
