The City of Norfolk’s Parks and Recreation director explains decision to close Lafayette Park at 7 p.m.

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – It appears the actions of a few are driving a major change to the operations of a popular park in Norfolk. Lafayette Park near the Virginia Zoo will now close at 7 p.m. for the foreseeable future.

City Officials say this scaling back of hours at Lafayette Park had to be done due to the many calls for disturbances, large crowds and the need to get ahead of potential “meet ups” at the space. The space is located at 3500 Granby St. Norfolk, VA 23504.

In a social media post, Norfolk Parks and Recreation confirmed it enacted the change on June 5.

“It is a public space, and we want you in the park, but we want you in the park following the park rules,” Lakita Frazier, the City of Norfolk Director of Parks and Recreation, said…
