Over 80 University of Maryland workers laid off amid budget concerns

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (7News) — Over 80 University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) workers were reportedly laid off on Wednesday, weeks after school officials warned of budget concerns for Fiscal Year 2027

The union representing employees for the school, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), confirmed the layoffs in a statement to 7News Maryland Bureau Chief Brad Bell.

The university said it laid off 84 state-funded employees after accounting for vacant positions and retirements that would not be backfilled. UMD said it has no plans for further job cuts, but said it would be “prepared to respond to changing financial circumstances as they arise.”…
